Four Causes of Errors in Tennis | What you can do to Minimize Mistakes

Veröffentlicht

When you play a tennis match you are bound to make mistakes. They are part of tennis and are unavoidable. You can, however, minimize them by understanding what causes you to make errors. These are the four ways players of all levels commit errors.

1. Technique
2. Footwork
3. Shot Selection
4. Mental Game

At the recreational level players are plagued by all four of these causes, however improper technique and footwork are by far the biggest reasons why players commit mistakes. At the high level, the vast majority of players possess good technique and footwork and their errors usually stem from poor shot selection and a weak mental game.

These are all very good points, Nick. But in my humble opinion what I call "micro tension" is commonly an underlying cause for all of these types of errors. What I mean by micro tension is tension that doesn't rise above the subliminal level and requires practice just to be able to detect it. It does not take much tension for us club players to interfere with our technique, footwork and shot selection because these haven' been developed to a high level. Dealing with micro tension requires, first, that we refine our ability to scan our bodies to detect its presence. This is the ability to differentiate when we are "dynamically" relaxed and when we are just entering the first levels of tension. When your strokes don't feel smooth but are using more effort than when you are in a relaxed rally–this is one sign of micro tension. Trying to hit winners when receiving against good serves is another sign of micro tension, as is consistently hitting flatfooted. Certainly you can bring your technique, footwork and shot selection to a level that can better resist micro tension. But I wonder if a better method is learning to detect and then reduce it so that our technique, footwork and shot selection won't have to reach a high level to combat this problem.

Very good explanation of common errors!

For recreational players the main trick is to learn how to play a long ball consistently. That will give you time to position yourself on the court and execute your strategy over the course of the point

    Fitness also!

On all levels the fitness benefits all 4 of these and how many errors
    you will commit
I can remember so many matches where technically and maybe even
mentally the opponent is stronger (but only at the beginning).. then
going through long rallies.. its the fitness which decides, mainly
because you lose your mental abitlity to focus the ball and do correct
technique (even on pro level you can see that)

Dramatic footage shows police rescue man from 50ft cliff using their belts

Footage released from Kent police shows the dramatic moment three officers attended to a man who was hanging off the side of a 50ft cliff at a disused quarry site.

The officers were alerted to the individual who intended to cause serious harm to himself.

The quick thinking constables created a makeshift hoist by linking their belts together, which enabled them to hold onto the man.

Luckily they were able to get some rope and pulled the distressed individual to safety.
